A doctorate offers the chance to undertake a substantial piece of research work that is worthy of publication and makes an original contribution to knowledge in a particular field. A doctorate is possible in all fields of studies offered at TU Braunschweig.
A doctorate in Germany means to do an individual research project under the guidance of a professor. You will need to find a professor who is interested in your chosen research field and who will supervise your research work. This professor will propose to you a specific topic for your doctoral work or, in some cases, may also accept an individual project proposal. At TU Braunschweig, the subject fields Chemistry and Biology also offer PhD programmes, in which you can prepare your doctorate within the framework of a systematic course structure. At the end of your doctoral studies you will have to submit a doctoral thesis and will have to present and defend your thesis in an oral examination.
As a doctoral student you will be required to attend departmental research seminars and present your progress on a regular basis, but apart from that you will work very independently and will not have a defined programme or course structure to follow. The time taken to complete a doctoral degree is dependent on your field of research and your successful progress and ranges from three to four years.
If you want to apply for an individual doctorate at TU Braunschweig the following pages will guide you step by step through the application process.
